DC/DC Converters for Industrial Applications and Vehicles (PCMD / PCMDS) by MTM Power® Messtechnik Mellenbach GmbH

Whenever the available system voltage is not suitable for supplying the existing electrical or electronic components, voltage converters must be used. Electrical converters that are capable of converting DC voltages are therefore called DC/DC converters or DC/DC converters. Until the 1950s, the conversion of DC voltage was only possible electromechanically by means of motor-generator coupling. Today, clocked electronic circuit topologies enable the transformation with the help of an internally generated alternating voltage.

A DC/DC converter has one input and one output. It can therefore map various functions and act as a step-down or step-up converter. A change in the voltage level, galvanic isolation and stabilization of the output can - both individually and in combination - be the reason for using a DC/DC converter or DC/DC module. The power range is wide and extends from a few milliwatts to supply a single electronic chip to the kilowatt range, for example when converting existing battery networks to a different voltage level. Due to the large number of different system voltages available and the equally diverse selection of nominal voltages of electrical components, the number of possible combinations of input and output voltages is unmanageable, especially as voltage conversion between input and output is offered both upwards, downwards and also only stabilizing. The majority of DC converters work unidirectionally, i.e. from input to output. However, converters with bidirectional function are also used, particularly in the drive sector.
