Textiles – find manufacturers and suppliers

Textiles include materials made from natural or synthetic fibers and are produced through various processes such as weaving, knitting, felting or pressing.

They are used in countless areas of life and offer a combination of functionality, comfort and aesthetics.

Below you will find an overview of how textiles work, the manufacturing processes and the finishing of textiles, as well as an overview of their areas of use and an outlook for the future:

How textiles work:

The way textiles work depends on the fibers used, the manufacturing processes and the specific finishes:

1. Natural fibers include cotton, wool, silk and linen. They offer breathability, thermal insulation and moisture absorption.
2. Synthetic fibers are polyester, nylon, acrylic and elastane. They are characterized by durability, elasticity and resistance to environmental influences.

Textile manufacturing process:

1. Weaving produces woven fabrics with high stability.
2. Knitting produces elastic and stretchy textiles.
3. Non-woven materials such as felt and nonwovens are created by felting or bonding the fibers.

Finishing of textiles:

Textiles can be dyed, coated and impregnated to achieve specific properties such as water repellency, UV protection or fire resistance.

Use of textiles:

Textiles are used in a variety of industries and applications:

1.Clothing and fashion:
Everyday clothing: Functional fabrics for comfort, warmth and style.
Sportswear: Breathable and moisture-wicking materials.
Special clothing: Protection against extreme temperatures, chemicals or UV radiation.

2. Home textiles:
Upholstery: Durable fabrics that are often impregnated.
Curtains and drapes: Decoration and light control.
Bedding: Cotton, linen or synthetics for comfort and hygiene.

3. Technical textiles:
Construction and architecture: geotextiles, insulating materials and membranes.
Medicine: dressing materials, surgical textiles and implants.
Automotive industry: seat covers, airbags and seat belts.

4. Industry and agriculture:
Filtration: textile filters for liquids and gases.
Agriculture: protective textiles for plants and soil.
Packaging: Bags and flexible containers.

5. Leisure and outdoor:
Tents, backpacks, outdoor clothing and technical equipment.

Future developments in the field of textiles:

• Integration of sensors and electronics (e.g. for health monitoring).
• Biodegradable textiles to reduce waste.
• 3D printing and customized textiles for the production of individualized products.

This overview shows that textiles play an indispensable role in everyday life and in specialized applications. Their use is being further developed through technological advances and sustainability requirements.

Below is an overview of the most important points to consider when purchasing textiles:

Purchasing textiles requires a strategic approach to ensure quality, price and availability.

• Purchasing is based on the requirements of your target group (e.g. clothing for specific sectors, home textiles, technical textiles).
• Observe current fashion trends, seasonal requirements or specific market needs.
• Plan a seasonally changing range to meet customer demand.
• Clarify whether you want to purchase textiles in the premium, mid-range or low-price segment.
• Ensure that the fabrics have a high material quality and are durable, skin-friendly and functional.
• Look out for certificates such as OEKO-TEX or GOTS for sustainable and pollutant-free textiles. ISO standards for technical and industrial textiles.
• Smart or technical fabrics can offer a unique selling point.
• Offer fabrics with special properties (e.g. water-repellent, antibacterial, UV-resistant) as added value.
• Ordering a sample allows you to check the quality before placing a large order.
• International suppliers provide access to lower prices, but may have longer delivery times.
• Make sure the supplier is able to supply the required quantity even if demand increases.
• Manufacturers often offer tiered pricing for larger quantities.
• Compare prices from different suppliers without compromising on quality.
• Check possibilities for personalization, e.g. logos, colors or special cuts.
• Suppliers should be able to fulfill special designs or requests.
• Use sustainable materials such as organic cotton, recycled materials or innovative, environmentally friendly alternatives.
• Pay attention to fair working conditions and wages as well as traceability of the supply chain (transparency about origin and production).
• Clarify whether the supplier will take care of transportation and customs clearance.
• Textiles should be well packaged and protected from moisture or pests.
• Check whether the goods can be delivered in batches to minimize storage costs.
• Ensure that you have reliable information on delivery times, even for repeat orders.
• Make clear agreements on replacement deliveries or credit notes for faulty products.
• Agree generous and transparent return options for unsold or damaged goods.
• Some manufacturers offer training on products and trends.
