A look at the development of Peruvian alpaca sweater exports by our guest author Martin Garay
But there are signs of a clear change!
The majority of Peruvian alpaca sweater exports go to the United States.
Seven of the 20 largest exporters ship 94 to 100% of their volume there. The US market is crowded and represents a concentration risk for all parties involved.
However, the data for week 11 of 2026 shows that a different trend is emerging in Europe. One exporter saw year-on-year growth of 276% to USD 143,000, with Germany and Austria being its main buyers. This is a significant shift in buyer geography for a category that has historically been dominated by the US.
European buyers, paying between USD 48 and USD 67 per piece, are gaining access to the same Peruvian fiber base on terms that reflect their unit price structure rather than the US wholesale minimum price. For exporters looking to reduce their dependence on a single market, the momentum that a growing group in Europe has already developed is a real signal, not a prediction.
