Cutting-edge research in physics, astronomy and engineering laboratories often deals with low-light-level experimental conditions. For example where single molecules or dim stars are observed. With Andor Technology’s high-end digital cameras we provide solutions for such scientific applications. The digital data can be translated into physical units on photon and electron level. A/D conversion is done with low-read-noise 14 or 16 bit A/D converters. Andor’s camera technology comprises CCD cameras for UV-VIS and X-ray imaging, EMCCDs incorporating on-chip electron multiplication, intensified ICCDs with nanosecond time resolution, and – as the latest innovation – sCMOS cameras. It depends on the purpose if either a slow scan CCD with low read noise, or a camera with fast frame rate should be preferred. Andor has the longest experience in operating CCD sensors in sealed and maintenance-free vacuum chambers that allow deep thermoelectric cooling down to -100 °C and possible exposure times from microseconds to hours.
