Vacuum thermal demercurisation by GMR Gesellschaft für Metallrecycling mbH
Vacuum-thermal demercurization
The collected/delivered mercury-containing waste is sorted and mechanically pre-treated, whereby, if possible, the main quantity of mercury contained is already removed.
The vacuum-thermal treatment for demercurization takes place in tightly sealed facilities in batch operation. Here, the mercury contained in the waste is quantitatively vaporized at temperatures between 340°C and 650°C and pressures of a few millibars, and then recovered as raw mercury by condensation at low temperatures. If necessary, organic components are thermally oxidized in an afterburner chamber under air or oxygen addition at temperatures of 800°C-1000°C. The residues remaining after vacuum-thermal treatment are practically mercury-free and, depending on the constituents, are either sent for further recycling or harmless disposal. The crude mercury obtained as a result of thermal treatment is refined into mercury of the highest purity in a multi-stage purification process and marketed.
