Compamed trade fair: maxon presents the world's first miniaturized and robot-assisted surgical device MIRA

The Swiss drive specialist maxon will be presenting a special highlight at the Compamed trade fair in Düsseldorf from November 11 to 14, 2024:

The MIRA Surgical System from Virtual Incision will be on display. MIRA is the world's first miniaturized and robot-assisted surgical device. It works with the maxon ECX Speed 6 and 8 mm drives (sterilizable).

MIRA was approved for commercial use in colorectal surgery in the USA at the beginning of this year. The surgical robot is currently being used in a clinical study in Switzerland to evaluate the device in benign hysterectomies. The data obtained will be used for international approval applications. The small and slim design expands the possibilities of robot-assisted surgery (RAS) for more patients and surgeons, as the compact system quickly makes any operating room suitable for robotic surgery.

For this first-of-its-kind robot, manufacturer Virtual Incision and maxon jointly developed the design of MIRA. The maxon drives are housed in the arms of the minibot. This allows MIRA to perform complex multi-quadrant procedures, such as mobilization of the colon during colon resection, on many different types of patients. The rigid arms with internally mounted motors provide the necessary power, control and precision for surgical procedures while allowing triangulation of the camera and instruments.

You can see the MIRA maxon stand at the Compamed trade fair in Düsseldorf - Hall 8a, Stand G16 .

At the trade fair, maxon will be presenting further product highlights, including the ECX Prime 18L. This second size of the extremely powerful ECX PRIME motor series is a real powerhouse. Equipped with ironless windings and 4-pole rotor designs, the brushless PRIME motors exhibit exceptionally rigid torque-speed behavior, which enables very stable control in highly dynamic applications.

Another highlight at the stand is the diverse selection of technical ceramics. Thanks to Ceramic Injection Molding, or CIM for short, and other manufacturing processes such as 3D printing and extrusion in combination with special post-processing methods, maxon produces extremely complex ceramic shapes - with unique precision and in the highest quality.
