FMS - clamping force control in every situation

The machining of large workpieces presents its own challenges. Depending on the nature of the workpiece, very high clamping forces must be applied. Clamped with face plates or claw boxes, the processing time can also be several days and shift changes. Conventional clamping has various disadvantages. Fluctuations in the clamping force arise due to the generation of pretensioning forces that are prone to losses. An inhomogeneous state of tension in the parting line and variable generation of clamping force by different users are also disadvantageous. Automatic loosening due to vibrations is also possible.

The monitoring of the clamping forces becomes safety-relevant for workers, components and machines, but the processing quality can only be guaranteed by sufficiently high clamping forces. Exact and constant clamping forces are particularly relevant to quality for easily deformable workpieces. Due to factors such as centrifugal forces, these can only change during machining. Furthermore, the workpieces can generate natural frequencies, caused by changes in geometry and structure, which can reduce the clamping force or even completely loosen the part. Large parts in particular can, due to a slight imbalance, generate tumbling movements with increasing rotation speed, which have a negative effect on the processing quality.

Such changes can be recognized and reported immediately through the use of a 'Force Monitoring System' or 'FMS' for short in order to carry out necessary adjustments or to stop machining in the event of a sudden drop in clamping force.

The FMS from JAKOB is available in two versions, under the designation 'FMS XXL' as a clamping claw with integrated monitoring system or as 'FMS Pad', which is used when machining large parts. Here it is used between the clamping element and the workpiece.

The measuring range is recorded from 0 - 1000 kN, depending on the version.

In summary, optimal process parameters ensure greater safety, better processing quality and increased productivity.
