Grinding wheels are wheels that are manufactured industrially from binders and hard, grained abrasive material. They usually have a hole in the middle. How do grinding wheels work and what exactly are they used for?

The main bonds used are galvanic, metallic sintered, synthetic resin bonds and ceramic bonds. However, if a high surface quality is required, polyurethane and rubber bonds are used. Of course, abrasives can also contain additives and fillers. These are required either for the manufacturing process itself or for changing the application properties of the grinding wheels. Synthetic resin bonds can therefore contain supporting grains. These provide higher viscosity, heat resistance and strength. Solid lubricants such as pyrite and graphite reduce the temperatures that occur during grinding.

Areas of application:

Depending on the desired result, a distinction is made between camshaft grinding, cylindrical grinding, ball grinding or flat grinding. If accuracy is important, a choice is made between rough grinding, medium grinding, finish grinding and pre-grinding. When it comes to the meshing geometry, cut-off or deep grinding are required. The grain size determines whether fine or coarse grinding is possible. With some grit sizes and materials, better accuracies than 2.5 micrometers can be achieved.
