Axle load scales: static and dynamic weighing for a wide range of applications

A truck scale is not always required to measure the weight of loads. With axle load scales, also known as wheel load scales, weighing technology offers an inexpensive and flexible alternative to conventional transfer scales that is suitable for numerous needs. Axle load scales save a lot of space and make larger conversions unnecessary. They are ideal for measurements that serve internal control purposes. In Germany, axle load scales are not calibratable. Depending on the desired result, another weighing must take place. Irrespective of this, axle load scales must be certified in order to guarantee high measuring accuracy.

How axle load scales work

Axle load scales are needed to determine the centre of gravity and to calculate the loading plan. This is the only way to ensure that the permissible total weight is not exceeded and that the load is optimally distributed. The axle load scale weighs each individual axle. For this, the vehicle must be in a horizontal position. Weighing is possible statically and automatically. Additional personnel are not required for this. For static weighing, each axle is weighed while the vehicle is stationary. For the dynamic variant, the vehicle can pass over the scales at a constant walking speed of between 8-10 km/h. The difference between the first and second axle is calculated by the scales. The total weight is determined by the difference between the first and second weighing. With automatic weighing, the built-in electronics detect the number of axles and evaluate the weight electronically.

Mobile scales and stationary platforms: fast vehicle checks including evaluation

Due to their low dead weight and compact dimensions, axle load scales are particularly mobile. In addition to mobile wheel load scales, there are models that are installed in a pit dug especially for this purpose. A level surface and solid flooring are prerequisites for this. The permanently installed axle load scales are located in a foundation cast from concrete. Since the construction volume of this variant is also quite small, the costs are manageable. Unlike permanently installed truck scales, mobile axle load scales for trucks are an inexpensive alternative for flexible weighing of trucks and trailers. This weighing is preferably used in agriculture, on construction sites and for traffic monitoring, where orienting weighing is initially sufficient. Subsequently, a second, calibrated weighing can be carried out. The lower price of the mobile axle load scale is mainly due to the lack of installation effort.

Exact measurement results for optimum control

Wheel and axle load scales for determining wheel and axle loads as well as total weights can be equipped with additional functions. Both the values of the individual wheels, those of the axles and the total weight can be displayed digitally and printed out to a printer. Even axles that have been installed close together can be measured separately without any problems using high-quality software. Even the customer-related master data can be edited. Accessories such as printers and radio equipment can also be added. No matter in which area the scales are used, their load cells must be extremely robust and absorb shock forces. This is the only way to guarantee the longevity of the scales. Even without direct traversing, an axle load scale offers just as accurate results as the conventional truck scale.
