Soybeans (Glycine max) – find manufacturers and suppliers

Soybeans (Glycine max) are legumes that can be used in food production, as animal feed, industrially or as a health product, even as a soil conditioner in agriculture.

They are one of the most important crops worldwide. Soybeans are characterized by their high protein content, their richness in essential fatty acids and their versatility in processing.

Below you will find the properties and possible uses, selected areas of application and the benefits of soybeans:

The properties of soybeans:

Soybeans contain around 35-40% protein, which makes them a valuable source of vegetable protein.
With a fat content of around 18-20%, they are also an important source of vegetable oils, especially soybean oil.
Soybeans are also high in fiber, making them a healthy food for digestion. Due to their nutrient density and versatility, soybeans are an important raw material in the food industry, agriculture and beyond.

Use of soybeans as food:

1. Tofu:
A protein-rich product made from soy milk. Tofu is an important source of protein in vegetarian and vegan diets.

2. Soy milk:
Plant-based milk alternative made by soaking, grinding and cooking soybeans. It is used as a substitute for cow's milk.

3. Soy sauce:
A fermented product made from soybeans, wheat, salt and water. It is often used as a condiment in Asian cuisine.

4. Edamame:
Young, green soybeans that are often eaten as a snack or in salads.

5. Soybean oil:
A widely used vegetable oil used for cooking, frying and as an ingredient in processed foods.

6. Tempeh:
A fermented soy product that has a firm texture and is used as a meat substitute.

7. Miso:
A fermented paste made from soybeans and other ingredients. It is often used for soups and marinades.

8. Soy protein:
A concentrated protein product derived from soybeans that is often used in protein bars, shakes and as a meat substitute.

Use of soybeans as animal feed:

1. Soybean meal:
A by-product of soybean oil production that is used as a high-protein feed for livestock, particularly poultry, pigs and cattle.

Industrial use of soybeans:

1. Biodiesel:
Soybean oil can be used to produce biodiesel, a more environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels.

2. Industrial products:
Soybeans are used to make plastics, paints, printing inks and lubricants.

Use of soybeans as a health product:

1. Food supplements:
Soybeans are a source of isoflavones, which are sold as dietary supplements to support health, especially to relieve menopausal symptoms.

Use of soybeans in agriculture:

1. Soil improvement:
Soybeans are legumes and help fix nitrogen in the soil, which improves soil fertility and reduces the need for synthetic fertilizers.

Benefits of soybeans:

• Soybeans are an excellent source of high-quality vegetable protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Regular consumption can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, strengthen the immune system and support bone health.
• Compared to animal protein production, growing soybeans is less resource-intensive and results in lower CO₂ emissions.
• Soybean products can meet a wide range of nutritional needs, especially for people looking for plant-based alternatives.

Soybeans play an important role in nutrition and agriculture worldwide, both for their nutritional and environmental benefits.

Below you will find an overview of the most important criteria to look out for when buying soybeans:

When buying soybeans, there are some important factors that should be considered to ensure the best quality, sustainability and suitability for your desired use.

• Make sure the beans are clean, evenly colored and free from cracks, spots or mold.
• Origin and freshness: Freshly harvested soybeans have a better germination capacity and nutrient density. Buy beans whose harvest or packaging date is as recent as possible.
• Organic soybeans are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). This can be particularly important if the beans are used for human consumption or for environmentally friendly farming.
• If avoiding genetically modified organisms is important to you, you should look for soybeans with a "Non-GMO" label.
• For soybeans that are grown under fair working conditions and with a focus on sustainable practices, look for the Fair Trade label.
• If the beans are intended for making tofu, soy milk, tempeh or other foods, it's important to buy food-grade soybeans that are free of contaminants and pesticide residues.
• For use as animal feed, other quality criteria may apply, with the price-performance balance playing a greater role.
• For growing sprouts or for gardening, you should buy soybeans with a high germination capacity.
• The packaging should be airtight and moisture-resistant to protect the beans from spoilage. Bulk packs should be easy to store, especially if the beans will be kept for a long time.
• check that the beans have been stored in cool, dry conditions to ensure quality.
• Compare prices to make sure you are getting a fair deal for the quality and quantity you want. Organic and fair trade beans can be more expensive, but often offer added value through better quality and ethical benefits.

By considering these factors, you can choose soybeans that are not only high quality, but also sustainable and fit for purpose.
