Blended fabric

Blended fabric consists of different types of materials. A distinction is made between two basic types of production.
Mixed fibres are mixed together from different components (filament basis). These fibres are then spun into yarns and woven into fabrics. Mixed yarns are produced when different fibres are mixed together to form a yarn and later processed into fabric.

Why is blended fabric often preferred?

This type of fabric is easier to care for, more functional and the biggest advantage - cheaper! Most of the time it is sportswear or workwear. Mixed fabrics are also processed into curtains, tents or furniture covers. Coats, waistcoats, suits, jackets, trousers or gloves are typical articles of clothing made of mixed fabric.

What types of materials are used?

In principle, the positive properties of different materials should be mixed in order to achieve the best result for the wearer. The mixture almost always contains a synthetic fibre as well as a natural fibre. The first blended fabric was created about 150 years ago. It consisted of linen and cotton and was called half linen. Elasthane increases the elasticity. Cotton is breathable, comfortable and suitable for allergy sufferers. Polyester dries super fast. Cotton and polyester are most frequently mixed (sportswear). This makes the garment more durable, abrasion-resistant and crease-free.

In addition, it is heat-insulating, skin-friendly, easy-care and moisture-repellent. Colour and structure effects and the gloss give a better appearance. The price of the end product is unbeatable. This makes it very easy to produce a large number of different related blended fabrics. These are also often mixed with the same weighting. The components can be read on the labels on the clothing. Both the name and the proportions of the starting fibre must be indicated up to a weight percentage of 85 %. If the percentage by weight of a fibre is less than 10 %, only the name must be given.

Care of blended fabrics?

Almost all blended fabrics can be washed at 40°C. Unfortunately, they are not very heat resistant. Therefore, the most gentle wash cycle must be used. First always take a look at the label. This at least indicates the degree to which the blended fabric must be washed. If none is available or if this is not clear, proceed as follows:

1. fill the washing machine only halfway, as the mixed fabric quickly wrinkles.

2. mixed fabric always consists to a certain extent of synthetic fibres. The gentle washing programme is therefore preferable. It is important to note that the rotational speed during spinning is also considerably reduced here.

3. Do not put into the dryer, as this is too much for mixed fabrics! Mixed fabric also dries easily in the air. If the laundry is taken damp from the machine, stripped and hung on the line, it does not even have to be ironed. Another advantage of this type of fabric.

Which detergent is suitable for mixed fabrics?

A normal coloured or full laundry detergent is sufficient. Mixed fabric has the advantage that no fabric softener is required. Bleach or starch should not be used. In the case of stains, the label on the bottle of the stain remover should be observed. These often contain harsh chemicals and are therefore not very suitable for mixed fabrics. It is best to soak the garment with normal gall soap and then wash it normally. Gall soap is produced on a natural basis and cannot harm the fibres.
