Counting scales are the nimble helpers in determining quantities

Especially the quantity determination of small parts, such as screws, can be an annoying, tedious and error-prone job. The counting scale, also known as reference scale or bulk scale, does this job quickly and reliably. For this purpose, the weight of a screw only has to be determined once. Then a container is weighed with the number of screws to be determined. The container weight (tare) is subtracted and the remaining value is divided by the reference weight (= individual weight of the screw). In this way, the number of screws is determined quickly and with low error tolerance. Instead of the number of screws, the quantities of tablets, buttons, sealing rings, etc. can of course also be determined with the piece counting scale using the same counting system.

How do the individual models differ?

An important distinguishing feature of counting scales is the weighing range. Depending on the manufacturer and model, it is between 0.3 and 30 kg. Several other values are linked to this characteristic. If a minimum load is required, this increases as the weighing range increases. Minimum loads are usually in the range of a few grams to about 200 grams. The question of how large the smallest part weight that the scale can still detect also depends on the weighing range. The minimum reference weight is usually between 0.05 and 50 grams. Readability is also linked to the weighing range.

The piece counting scales also differ in size and weight. Depending on the planned application, the size of the weighing plate is particularly interesting.

Some scales offer up to 100 memory locations for storing the reference weight and tare. These scales also differ significantly in the design of the display. LCD displays are standard today - often with backlighting. However, while many scales have only one display on the front, other models have a second display on the back of the precision scale or a second display unit that can be mounted on the wall. Some models have three displays on the front panel: for the total weight, for the reference weight and for the piece count.

Should the piece counting scale be networked with other devices or an existing network? The buyer must ensure that at least one appropriate interface is available. These RS-232 or WLAN interfaces are often considered accessories that must be purchased separately. However, they must be installed directly ex works, and retrofitting is usually not possible.

Many of the offered counting scales can be calibrated. If a counting scale is designated as calibratable, this only means that calibration is possible. It does not mean that this scale has already been calibrated. Verification officially confirms that the measuring errors of the balance are within the tolerance limits of the respective accuracy class. Such verification of the counting scale is necessary, for example, if the determination of the number of pieces is used for pricing.

Useful accessories

With the right accessories, the functionality of counting scales can be expanded and/or improved. Useful accessories include, for example:

• Protective hoods that protect the sample from environmental influences and thus enable correct weighing even under difficult conditions.
• Batteries for mobile operation of the scales
• Signal lamps that make weighing within the tolerance range visible even over long distances.
• Y-cable, which can be used to connect two terminal devices, for example a printer and a barcode reader, to the RS-232 data interface.
• A WLAN interface is used to network the counting scale with computers or smartphones and to integrate it into the company network. However, these accessories must be ordered directly with the purchase of the scale. It cannot be retrofitted.
• Tare pan made of stainless steel. It is easy to clean and therefore ideal for weighing or counting food, for example.
• Calibration of the counting scale
