Patent - Battery Management System and Method (Battery Management System and Method for Operating an Electrochemical Energy Storage Device) by European Business Group
The innovative solution relates to a battery management system for electrochemical energy storage devices, in partular for lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, stationary storage systems, industrial applications and high-voltage battery packs. The core of the invention is a cell-specific predictive control architecture in which individual battery cells are not merely monitored but are prospectively evaluated and actively influenced based on data-driven models.
The system comprises cell-associated power control units, sensors, locally activatable thermal actuators, regeneration control and a computing unit. The computing unit generates a cell-specific state representation from cell-specific operating data, detects deviations between measured and expected cell behaviour and then executes a further prediction model. This model predicts health, ageing, temperature or failure states of the respective cell.
The invention makes battery systems more powerful, longer lasting and safer because it prospectively identifies individual cells, selectively relieves them, cools them locally, treats them regeneratively and adaptively readjusts the control strategy only within defined safety limits.
