For most equipment requiring hydraulic cylinders, a single rod system will do as they are less complex and extremely reliable. But there are certain situations where, depending on the application, one needs to switch to telescopic hydraulic cylinders.
With a telescopic hydraulic cylinder, there are more strokes in a compact size, and this long stroke combined with the size comes in handy when there is a small surface area to work within a vehicle or machinery.
While single-rod hydraulic cylinders can be utilized in most cases, here are some applications of telescopic hydraulic cylinders:

DUMP TRUCK
The most common use of telescopic hydraulic cylinders can be seen in a dump truck. When unloading, a dump truck needs to reach an angle of 60 degrees, and a normal cylinder will not be able to achieve that; or it needs an extremely long rod to finish the task, which would be expensive.
Single-acting hydraulic cylinders can be used in dump trucks, as the vertical motion would allow for a smooth retraction. Double-acting hydraulic cylinders can be used when moving horizontally, while retraction force is needed to be used.

CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT
Telescopic hydraulic cylinders can be fitted into construction equipment. A crane needed to move heavy loads can extend horizontally, while a digging vehicle can reach better depths with the help of telescopic hydraulic cylinders.
OIL RIGS
Oil rigs are known to use both telescopic and single-rod hydraulic cylinders. They achieve their task by employing both types forming a hybrid. As offshore oil rigs are situated in small spaces, telescopic hydraulic cylinders are space savers and also give better output than single-rod cylinders.

OTHER USE
Lift systems for cleaning windows utilize telescopic hydraulic cylinders. After reaching a certain fixed height with the metal frame structure, the cylinders help to extend the top a little further.
