One of the most efficient forms of renewable energy is hydroelectricity. A typical hydroelectric plant generates electricity through the use of hydroelectric generators. Over time, due to high frequency vibrations excited by periodic and stochastic forces from the hydraulic machines and generators, problems often occur in connection with these generators. The vibration is usually most severe at the guide bearing above the generator rotor, causing significant damage to the generator and surrounding structure.

ITT Enidine has developed a new range of Visco-Elastic-Support (VES) products to provide improved dynamic performance of the rotor bearing system and reduce the thermal force acting on the bearing support structure.

The VES operating principle is to provide high dynamic stiffness with additional damping for the rotor bearing system, while keeping static stiffness low for thermal movement.

This reduces the dynamic response of the generator and avoids the transfer of excessive thermal forces to the respective structures, thus extending the life of the generator as well as the structure and increasing the output power of the power plant.
