However, metrology experts have recently pointed out that a single spec sheet number is far from sufficient to gauge a device's real-world performance. The true capability of a scanner depends on four interrelated core dimensions.
First, Absolute Accuracy measures the deviation between measured data and the physical object's true dimensions, typically validated against calibrated artifacts. Second, Repeatability examines the consistency of multiple measurements under identical conditions, which is the most direct reflection of process stability. Furthermore, Point Cloud Resolution determines the scanner's ability to capture fine surface details, directly influencing the quality of complex surface modeling. Finally, Volumetric Accuracy—often the most overlooked metric—reveals how measurement errors accumulate when scanning large-scale objects, making it critical for large-part applications.
Industry experts emphasize that companies relying solely on peak theoretical specifications are highly likely to face performance discrepancies in actual production environments. Consequently, the industry consensus advises: instead of trusting spec sheets blindly, manufacturers should conduct rigorous on-site verification tests using their actual parts and operating environments.
