The electric motor is now more than just an alternative for cars. But what about trucks? Despite high acquisition costs, short ranges and high tare weights, the technology is predicted to have a promising future in freight transportation. As a pioneer of alternative transport options such as combined transport, LKW WALTER is naturally also looking at alternative fuels and drive systems. This has resulted in various tests, such as the recent test week with a battery-powered VOLVO tractor unit (BEV) in Poland.
The test phase: a week of purely electric long-distance transport
As one of the first transport organizations in Europe, we were able to extensively test the BEV tractor unit from the manufacturer Volvo together with a Polish transport partner for a week on longer routes. During several transports within Poland, the technology proved to be very promising for the future. The highlight: a saving of over 1,600 kg of CO2 emissions over a distance of 2,435 km - a saving of more than 65% compared to a diesel vehicle. Up to 629 km could be covered per day.
Why are we doing this?
With more than 558,000 transports in combined transport in 2022 and more than 350 departures per day, LKW WALTER has been fulfilling its responsibility for a green future in European freight transport for years. Nevertheless, there is literally still a great deal of potential for development on the route. We believe that battery-powered vehicles have the potential to develop zero-emission corridors on short pre- and onward-carriage routes in combined transport. For this reason, we are expanding our tests in the near future and hope to reach another milestone for combined transport in the near future.
We offer you three models to keep your vehicles as busy as possible.
