Safety and stability: what sensors do in rail & rail transport

Micro-Epsilon solves numerous measurement tasks in rail and railroad transport with in-depth industry know-how. The sensor technologies, which are both innovative and robust, make a significant contribution to the safety and stability of railcars, wagons, wheel tires, brakes, track and rails. Various sensor technologies are used, such as inductive sensors, eddy current sensors, laser scanners and inclination and acceleration sensors. Measurements are taken under sometimes the most adverse conditions with weather, grinding dust and vibrations.

Profile measurement and distance control when forging wheel tires
Blue laser scanners from Micro-Epsilon are used to monitor the dimensional accuracy of wheel tires during forging. Conventional laser scanners reach their limits with red-hot steel. Micro-Epsilon's Blue Laser technology is patented for measurement tasks on red-hot steel. This allows the wheel tire profile to be continuously monitored during forging in order to feed the measurement data to the control system. In addition, the position of the wheel tire is recorded during handling with laser travel time sensors.

Bearing gap measurement in axle bearings
In high-speed trains, the oil gap in axle bearings is permanently checked with eddyNCDT eddy current sensors. The oil film in the bearing gap prevents direct contact between the bearing surface and the shaft. The resulting sliding properties of the bearing increase the efficiency and thus extend the service life.

Wheel tire profile measurement on the test stand
The wheel wear on rail vehicles caused by the high mileage affects safety as well as driving characteristics and generates high maintenance costs. Laser sensors record the profile sets of entire trains as a preventive measure. The profile data is used to determine the maintenance dates for reprofiling.

Deformation measurement of concrete joints and railroad ties
The stress on rails and ties is very high, especially in busy curves. Thanks to the robust design of magneto-inductive sensors, they are predestined for outdoor use and provide long-term stable measurement results that allow statements to be made about the movement and deformation of concrete sleepers in curves.

Measuring the inclination angle in passenger trains
Inductive displacement sensors of the induSENSOR EDS series are integrated in high-speed trains to measure the inclination of the car body. This allows the effect of lateral acceleration forces on passengers to be reduced.
