Global warming is a challenge for humanity - Sharm el-Sheikh has just reminded us of this again. But in addition to abstract global issues of the UN, small, personal steps can also help. Discussions about sustainability are primarily about energy consumption. Laboratory equipment is no exception. Even the most environmentally friendly and energy efficient ultra-low temperature freezers still require a significant amount of energy to maintain extremely low temperatures of -80 °C 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for years.
The non-profit organization My Green Lab and the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) have once again teamed up to award the best concepts for improving cold storage in terms of sustainability: The Freezer Challenge 2023.
Users, including you, can earn points by taking action in the areas of good management practices, temperature tuning and other areas, and by sharing information about best practices. Awards will be given to those who have contributed the most to saving energy and improving their sample storage. In addition to optimizing our own refrigeration equipment, we are all learning to be more conscious of energy use in the lab.
Since 2017, the Challenge has saved more than 24 million KWh of electricity worldwide through improved cold storage.
Because of our responsibility to the environment, Eppendorf is proud to support the International Freezer Challenge 2023 for the sixth consecutive year starting in 2018.
