Leak testing systems – find manufacturers and suppliers

Leak testing systems are specialized machines or devices that are used to check the tightness of components, products or entire systems.

The purpose of this equipment is to ensure that no liquids or gases can escape from a container or system. These tests are important in many industries, such as the automotive, aerospace, medical, food and packaging industries. Leak testing is an important step in ensuring the quality and safety of products.

1. Purpose and application
The main purpose of leak testing is to ensure that a product or component remains leak-tight under operating conditions and that no liquids or gases escape. These tests are important to prevent leaks that could lead to product failure, environmental pollution or safety risks.

Application examples:
- Automotive industry: Testing engines, fuel systems, air conditioning systems or brake systems.
- Medical technology: Ensuring the tightness of syringes, infusion systems and prostheses.
- Packaging industry: Checking bottles, containers and other packaging for leaks.

2. Methods of leak testing
There are various methods for testing the tightness of a system, depending on the application, material and requirements.

Here are some common methods:

a) Pressure decay test (pressure loss test)
- This method is one of the most common leak tests. The component is filled with pressure (usually air or a gas) and then it is observed whether the pressure drops over time. A drop in pressure would indicate a leak.
- Advantage: Simple and quick.
- Disadvantage: Sensitivity is limited, especially for very small leaks.

b) Differential pressure test
- Here, the test specimen is divided into two chambers, one of which is pressurized while the other serves as a reference. The pressure difference between the two chambers is monitored. If there is a leak, the pressure difference changes.
- Advantage: Higher sensitivity than with the simple pressure drop test.
- Disadvantage: More complex systems.

c) Helium leak test
- This method uses helium as the test gas because helium has very small molecules and so even the smallest leaks can be detected. The test specimen is filled with helium and a mass spectrometer measures whether and how much helium escapes.
- Advantage: Extremely accurate and sensitive method.
- Disadvantage: More expensive than other test methods.

d) Underwater test (bubble test)
- In this method, the component is filled with compressed air and then immersed in a water bath. If the component is leaking, bubbles rise in the water.
- Advantage: Visually simple method.
- Disadvantage: Only suitable for larger leaks, it also requires the use of water, which is not practical for all materials.

e) Vacuum test
- The component is placed in a chamber under vacuum and then filled with gas. It is measured whether the vacuum in the chamber is disturbed by escaping gas.
- Advantage: Very sensitive, especially for small leaks.
- Disadvantage: Complex and expensive equipment.

3. Structure of a leak testing system
The design of a leak test system depends heavily on the test method and the object to be tested, but some main components can be found in most systems:

• Pressure generator and control: a system that generates compressed air or gas, brings it to the desired pressure and keeps it constant for the test time.
• Measuring devices: Sensors for recording the pressure, temperature, vacuum or other relevant parameters. These are usually high-precision pressure gauges or differential pressure sensors.
• Control unit: This is the central control unit of the system. It manages the pressure generation, monitors the sensors and specifies the test time and other important parameters. Modern leak testing systems are often equipped with digital control systems that automatically evaluate the results.
• Test chamber: A closed chamber into which the test object is placed. The test chamber plays a central role in some methods such as the helium leak test or the vacuum test.
• Evaluation and documentation systems: Modern systems are often connected to computers that create test protocols, save the results and enable traceability of the test results.

4. Automation and integration into production lines
In many industries, especially in mass production, leak testing systems are fully integrated into production lines. Such automated testing stations can test every part produced for leaks in a very short time without slowing down production. They are often connected to robots or conveyor systems that bring the component to the test system and forward it after the test.

5. Quality assurance and standards
Leak tests are often subject to strict standards and legal requirements, especially in safety-relevant industries. There are internationally recognized standards such as ISO 9001 for quality management, which also contain guidelines for leak testing. In special areas, such as medicine or food packaging, there are additional standards that must be observed (e.g. ISO 11607 for sterile packaging).

6. Advantages of leak testing

• Quality assurance: Leak testing ensures that products meet the intended safety standards and functionalities.
• Prevention of product failures: Leaks can lead to serious defects. Regular testing ensures that such problems are detected and rectified during production.
• Cost efficiency: Early detection of leaks means that cost-intensive recalls or repairs can be avoided.
• Safety: In critical areas such as aviation or medical technology, the safety of products is of the utmost importance. Leak tests guarantee that no dangerous leaks occur.

Conclusion
Leak testing systems are indispensable tools for ensuring the safety and quality of products in many industries. They use different techniques to ensure that a product or system has no leaks that could lead to malfunctions or hazards. Through automated systems and accurate measurement methods, companies can ensure high product quality while minimizing their production costs and risks.
