Everyone knows them, the scales that stand in the supermarket in the vegetable and fruit department or can be found at every market stall. These are available with or without a rechargeable battery. In commercial enterprises, however, these scales must be calibrated in any case. These scales can often also calculate the price and have an integrated receipt printer. Shop scales differ in platform size, graduation and weighing range. Price calculating scales are often found in the vegetable and fruit section. Just place the bananas on the weighing platform and the label with the weight and price is printed out and ready to stick. The weighing platforms are therefore larger. Stainless steel weighing trays (rustproof!) or cash drawers are also available for these scales. If the platform is flat, apples or kiwis can "roll" off.
Almost all shop scales have an LCD display (backlit). In addition to the weight, it is also possible to indicate the basic price as well as the purchase price. Furthermore, there is also the possibility of a customer feedback display. Market scales as well as many shop scales for fruit, meat or vegetables are splash-proof. Quick keys facilitate the work processes in the sales enormously. Graduations are available from 0.5 - 10 g. Mains & battery operation are possible with almost all shop scales. Battery operation up to 5000 hours is not uncommon. The weighing range is mostly up to 30 kg. Of course, foil coatings are also available for the heavily used keyboards. Stainless steel weighing platforms ensure hygienic weighing and prevent rusting. Shop scales usually work with high-quality strain gauge load cells. Shop scales with high display are scales whose display is located on a kind of tripod.
Shop scales can also be multi-range scales. They are characterized by durability even though they are in continuous operation. Shop scales tend to be small scales, but they are used constantly and must weigh very accurately. Some of these scales are available with tare (packing) function. Item keys are handy and save a lot of time, both for staff and customers! These are those keys that carry the image of the item, such as a banana. For intensive everyday use, soft-touch keyboard mats (water-repellent) are also available for mechanical keys. These are particularly often found on market scales. Battery operation can last up to 50 h, charging time is up to 14 h on average. Some store scales are equipped with so-called high-speed receipt printers. Also the packing of the goods is offered by some shop scales with multiple functions.
If a shop scale is purchased for non-commercial use, it does not have to be calibrated. For commercial use, the scale must be calibrated in any case. Calibration must be ordered at the time of purchase. Verification at a later date is not possible. Quick and article keys as well as scales with tare function facilitate the work enormously. Cleaning and maintenance are easy. Used shop scales that are still fully functional can still be used in any case. It is essential that shop scales for commercial use are calibrated before they are used for the first time. This is no longer possible at a later date. Shop scales belong to calibration class III. They are precision scales in continuous operation, splash-proof and dust-proof and are operated digitally or mechanically. Energy sources can be the mains or batteries. The display is possible on a tripod. A back display, so that the customer can also see the price and weight at the checkout, is also available. Water channels on the edge of the housing ensure hygienic and practical operation of the shop scale.
The displays are often backlit. In the supermarket department, vegetable scales and fruit scales all have label printing capabilities. Self-adhesive labels are very practical and suitable for everyday use, for example, when weighing bananas and then sticking them on and charging them at the checkout. High-quality price-calculating shop scales with label printer have calibration, internal battery operation (operating time 200 h!), short charging time of approx. 12 h!, weighing range up to 30 kg and readability with 10 g, illuminated display and additional memory space for individual additional programming. However, the load cells have to be replaced from time to time. But this is not such a big problem in itself. If these scales are treated and cleaned properly, they will last "forever" in the truest sense of the word. The larger the weighing surface, the easier and more precise the weighing process. The "packing function" is quite handy when the scale is at the market stall (market scale). Weigh, eject the price and then pack the goods - simple, fast and precise! Especially practical are those shop scales that have both mains and battery operation. If the power fails, you can always switch to battery operation.
