Nectarines (Prunus persica) – find manufacturers and suppliers

Nectarines (Prunus persica var. nucipersica) are a smooth-skinned variety of peaches that are known for their sweet, juicy fruit.

They belong to the rose family (Rosaceae) and, unlike peaches, have a smooth, hairless skin.

Below is an overview of the characteristics and varieties of nectarines, as well as an overview of their use and nutritional values:

Characteristics and varieties of nectarines:

The fruits are round or slightly oval, have firm, juicy flesh and contain a stone in the center.
Nectarines originated in China and were later introduced to the Mediterranean and other warmer regions. Today, Spain, Italy, Greece and the USA are the main areas of cultivation. They prefer warm, sunny climates and are mainly harvested in the summer months.

There are several varieties that differ in taste, fruit size and color. Here are the most important distinguishing features:

1. Yellow-fleshed nectarines:
Intensely sweet and tart, often with a golden yellow color.
2. White-fleshed nectarines:
Milder and sweeter in flavor, with a pale, almost translucent flesh.

Use of nectarines:

Nectarines are extremely versatile and can be used raw, cooked, baked or grilled:

1. In the kitchen:
As an ingredient in salads (e.g. with rocket, mozzarella and walnuts).
Combined with meat such as chicken or pork in sauces or fillings.
Grilled as a side dish or topping for cheese.
In risotto, couscous or as an ingredient in summer bowls.
Together with other fruits (e.g. apricots) or spices such as ginger and cinnamon in jams and chutneys.
As desserts in fruit tarts, tarts, crumbles or over ice cream.

2. Eat fresh:
Pure as a snack, in fruit salads or as a garnish for desserts.
In drinks such as smoothies, juices or as a fruity note in cocktails and iced teas.

3. In cosmetics:
Nectarine extracts are used in creams and masks as they have a moisturizing and antioxidant effect.
The vitamins and nutrients they contain promote healthy hair and add shine.

4. Medical use:
The dietary fiber supports healthy bowel function.
Potassium promotes balanced blood pressure and strengthens the cardiovascular system.
Vitamin C strengthens the immune system.
Nectarines have a mild diuretic effect and support the metabolism.

5. Decoration and presentation:
Nectarines are often used as a decorative addition to fruit platters, in drinks or in desserts. The shiny, colorful skin makes them particularly appealing.

Below you will find an overview of the most important criteria to look out for when buying nectarines:

When buying nectarines, there are some important criteria that will help you choose ripe, juicy and tasty fruit.

• The skin should be shiny and free from wrinkles or damage.
• An even, bright red, orange or yellow color indicates ripeness. Slight green spots mean that the fruit can still ripen.
• Avoid fruit with bruises, cracks, mold or dark spots.
• A ripe nectarine feels slightly pliable when you squeeze it gently.
• Hard fruits are unripe, overly soft fruits may be overripe.
• A fruity-sweet scent is a good sign of ripe nectarines. If the scent is missing, the fruit is probably not yet ripe.
• Ripe, juicy nectarines are relatively heavy for their size as they contain a lot of fruit juice.
• The skin should be neither wrinkled nor dry.
• Slight "scars" (small lines) are natural and do not affect the quality.
• Nectarines are mainly available in the summer months (June to September) and are of the best quality then.
• To ensure that the peel can be eaten, you should preferably buy organic nectarines, as they are free from pesticides.

When buying nectarines, look for a smooth, shiny skin, a uniform color and a good weight. The fruit should yield easily and give off a sweet aroma. For the best taste, ripe fruit from the peak season is preferable. Organic nectarines are particularly suitable if the peel is used.
