Pocket scales: compact helpers for precise measurement

Scales are used in both business and private contexts. Pocket scales are generally used for private purposes. Only particularly high-quality and expensive models are used as helpers in a business environment, for example for jewellers. But regardless of whether it is an expensive top-of-the-range model or an inexpensive entry-level model, a pocket scale can be equipped with numerous special functions and distinguished by a wide variety of features. When making a selection, it is therefore important to pay attention to numerous aspects.

Basic features at a glance

As the name suggests, a pocket scale is very compact and can be stowed in a pocket or rucksack. A typical feature of a pocket scale is a small case, which serves on the one hand as storage space for the scale and accessories and on the other hand as a protective cover. Nevertheless, pocket scales are rarely transported. The risk of damage to the sensitive measuring sensors due to vibrations is too great. Almost all pocket scales are digital - including LCD display and electric measuring mechanism. The term "digital pocket scale" is therefore obsolete, but manufacturers like to use it to emphasize the advantages of modern weighing stations: With measuring accuracies of at least 0.1 grams, visualized on relatively large screens, a pocket scale serves as an optimal aid for weighing mail items and recipes. The alternative, a mechanical pocket scale, shines more with its prestige factor than with its technical values. This is because the fine adjustment of a mechanical pocket scale requires a lot of time, transport is complicated and numerous additional functions, with which pocket-sized digital scales score points, cannot be used either. Most digital scales, for example, can weigh in different measures: In addition to grams (g) and milligrams (mg), common units of measurement include ounces (oz), troy ounces (ozt), pennyweights (dwt) and carats (ct).

Functions and differentiation

A pocket scale usually displays the weight in 0.1 gram increments; the scale or maximum weight is between 100 and 300 grams. Since the measuring sensors are very sensitive, overweight should be avoided at all costs! Otherwise there is a risk of irreparable damage: The compact processing rules out repairs or at least makes them uneconomical; a new purchase turns out to be cheaper. This also applies if the tolerance value is too high, which can happen over time with simpler models. If the scale is used frequently, the error rate increases, especially in higher weight ranges.

Because of its compact design as well as its light weight, the pocket scale is often referred to as a compact scale. The transitions between pocket scales and compact scales are fluid. However, clear lines can be drawn to precision balances and fine balances: Compared to precision scales or fine scales, pocket scales are more compact, but do not provide the same measuring accuracy. High-quality precision balances, for example, weigh in increments of 0.001 grams! Laboratory balances represent a special stage. The maximum weight of these measuring aids can be up to 150 kilograms! The term "gold scale" or "coin scale" is often used synonymously with the term "pocket scale". In both cases, this refers to a scale for use in the jewellery trade. The term jeweler's scale is therefore just as common. If a scale is to be calibrated, the manufacturer must be informed of this before delivery. Subsequent official certification is rarely possible. In addition, the number of compact scales that can be calibrated is limited.

Small extras, big impact

The distinction between the classic pocket scale and gold, coin and jeweler's scales points to the importance of the additional functions of a precision scale. A weighing function or counting function, for example, is helpful for weighing many smaller components with the same weight. Depending on the model, this additional function can be used to define temporary or long-term weight units, such as the weight of a coin. The scale automatically determines the number of coins placed on the weighing surface based on the weight and the stored unit. The weighing surface can also have different coatings. Variants made of stainless steel are considered the classics. In the field of medicine or pharmacy, on the other hand, versions with antibacterial surfaces are used to maintain quality. It is important that the weighing surface is large enough and offers sufficient space. Otherwise, larger objects such as letters may slide down the sides or falsify the measured values. Since a compact digital precision scale is equipped with a display, a power supply is a basic requirement. This is normally provided by batteries. Models with a rechargeable battery or mains adapter are the exception. Last but not least, pocket scales can be equipped with robust coverings. Some scales are even shockproof and waterproof and are therefore suitable for portable use.
