Free-space radar sensors – find manufacturers and suppliers

Free-space radar sensors are modern measuring and detection systems that use electromagnetic waves in the radar range to determine distances, levels or positions of objects without contact.

They are used, for example, in the process industry, in storage and conveyor technology, in water management, in automation technology and in the food and chemical industries. They offer high measuring accuracy, are robust against environmental influences and work largely independently of temperature, pressure or dust pollution.

The following provides a comprehensive overview of how free-space radar sensors work, their most important types, typical areas of application and their main advantages.

Functionality of free-space radar sensors:

Free-space radar sensors work on the principle of time-of-flight measurement of electromagnetic waves.
The sensor generates high-frequency radar pulses that are emitted via an antenna in the direction of the measuring range.
These electromagnetic waves propagate at the speed of light and hit the object to be detected or the surface of a medium.
The term "free-radiating" means that the radar waves are emitted freely through space without being physically guided by a medium such as a probe or cable.

When the radar waves hit a surface, some of the energy is reflected and sent back to the sensor.
The sensor measures the time that elapses between the transmission of the signal and the reception of the reflected signal.
The distance to the object can be calculated very precisely from this transit time.

The sensor's antenna plays a central role, as it bundles the radar beams and directs them specifically into the measurement area.
Modern systems use special antenna shapes to optimize the beam angle and minimize interference from obstacles or container walls.

In practice, radar frequencies in the millimeter wave range are used, for example in the range of around 24 GHz or 80 GHz.
Higher frequencies allow the beam to be more focused and therefore more precise measurement.

Signal processing takes place electronically in the sensor. Modern devices use digital signal processing to filter out interfering reflections and provide reliable measurement results.

Types of free-space radar sensors :

Free-space radar sensors are available in various designs that differ in terms of measuring principle, frequency range and application.

Pulse radar sensors:
Pulse radar sensors emit short radar pulses and measure the time until the reflected signal returns.
This method is particularly robust and is suitable for large measuring ranges. I
mpulse radar systems are often used in industry for level measurement in tanks or silos.
FMCW radar sensors:
FMCW stands for "Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave".
In this method, a continuous radar signal with varying frequency is transmitted.
The difference between the transmitted and received signal is used to calculate the distance.
This method enables particularly precise measurements and is often used in industrial automation applications.
High-frequency radar sensors:
Modern free-radiating radar sensors often operate in the 80 GHz range.
This high frequency enables very strong focusing of the radar beam and a high measurement resolution.
As a result, even small objects or difficult measurement situations can be reliably detected.
Short-range radar sensors:
These sensors are designed for smaller measuring ranges and are used in automation technology or conveyor technology, for example.
They are often used for object detection or distance measurement.
Long-range radar sensors:
Long-range radar sensors are designed for large measuring ranges and are used, for example, in large silos, tanks or in environmental technology.

Use of free-spaceradar sensors:

Free-space radar sensors are used in many industrial and technical areas, especially where non-contact and reliable measurement methods are required.

1. Process industry:
In the chemical and petrochemical industries, free-space radar sensors are often used for level measurement in tanks.
They enable precise measurements even at high temperatures, high pressure or aggressive media.

2. Food industry:
In food production, radar sensors are used to monitor fill levels of liquids or bulk goods.
As the measurement is contactless, there is no risk of contamination.

3. Bulk goods and silo technology:
In silos for grain, cement, plastic granules or other bulk materials, free-radiating radar sensors reliably measure the fill level, even when dust or uneven surfaces are present.

4. Water and environmental technology:
Radar sensors are used in waterworks, sewage treatment plants or river monitoring systems to measure water levels or flow rates.

5. Automation technology:
In industrial production plants, radar sensors are used to detect objects, measure distances or determine the position of moving components.

6. Logistics and conveyor technology:
In automated storage systems, radar sensors can be used to monitor distances or detect obstacles.

Advantages of free-space radar sensors:

Free-space radar sensors offer numerous advantages over other measurement methods.

One major advantage is the non-contact measurement. As no direct contact with the measured medium is required, there is no mechanical wear and the sensors can also be used with aggressive or hygienically sensitive media.
Another advantage is the high degree of independence from ambient conditions. Radar waves are hardly affected by dust, steam, temperature or pressure. As a result, the sensors deliver stable measurement results even under difficult conditions.
Free-space radar sensors also enable very precise measurements over long distances. Modern systems achieve measuring ranges of several tens of meters with high accuracy.
Radar sensors are also very low-maintenance. As they have no moving parts and operate without contact, wear and tear is minimal.
Another advantage is their high degree of flexibility. Free-beam radar sensors can be used for level measurement as well as for object detection or distance measurement.

Free-space radar sensors are powerful and versatile measuring systems that are used in numerous industrial applications. By using electromagnetic radar waves, they enable precise, non-contact and reliable measurement of distances, fill levels and positions. Different sensor types and frequency ranges enable adaptation to a wide range of applications - from level measurement in large silos to precise distance detection in automated production systems. Thanks to their robustness against environmental influences, their high measuring accuracy and their low maintenance requirements, free-radiation radar sensors have established themselves as an important technology in modern industry, automation and process measurement technology.

Here are the most important aspects to look out for when purchasing free-space radar sensors:

In modern industry, free-space radar sensors are important measuring and detection systems for the contactless determination of fill levels, distances or positions. They work with electromagnetic radar waves and enable reliable measurements even under demanding environmental conditions, such as dust, steam, high temperatures or aggressive media. The professional purchase of such sensors requires a careful analysis of the technical requirements and operating conditions. An unsuitable sensor selection can lead to inaccurate measured values, disruptions in the production process or increased maintenance costs. For this reason, technical performance data, compatibility with existing systems, environmental conditions and long-term cost-effectiveness should be taken into account in addition to the pure acquisition costs.

The first step in professional purchasing is to precisely analyze the measurement task.
Radar sensors are used for various applications, such as level measurement in tanks and silos, distance measurement in automation technology or level measurement in water management.
Several technical factors have to be taken into account. These include the maximum measuring range, the desired measuring accuracy and the type of medium or object to be measured.
The surface quality of the object to be measured also plays a role, as it influences the strength of the reflected radar waves.
In tanks or silos, for example, the shape of the surface of a bulk material can be irregular, which places particular demands on signal processing. A precise analysis of the application helps to select the appropriate sensor type.
An important technical parameter of free-radiation radar sensors is the radar frequency used. Modern sensors often operate in the range of around 24 GHz or 80 GHz.
Sensors with higher frequencies generate a more narrowly focused radar beam. This allows them to measure more precisely and better avoid interference from installations in the tank or container walls.
A small beam angle can be decisive, particularly in the case of narrow silos or complex tank geometries.
When purchasing, it is therefore important to check which frequency and beam angle are best suited to the application in question.
The maximum measuring range is another key selection criterion. Depending on the application, measuring ranges from a few centimetres to several dozen meters may be required.
In addition to the range, measuring accuracy also plays an important role. In many industrial applications, measured values must be very precise in order to reliably control production processes.
When making a professional purchase, it is therefore important to check whether the sensor performance meets the requirements of the application in terms of range and accuracy.
Free-space radar sensors are often used under demanding conditions. These include high temperatures, dust exposure, humidity, aggressive chemicals or strong vibrations.
The sensors must therefore be designed for these environmental conditions. Important factors include the protection class of the housing, the temperature resistance of the electronics and the chemical resistance of the materials used.
In hygienically sensitive areas such as the food or pharmaceutical industry, special requirements for cleaning and material quality must also be met.
The antenna of a radar sensor has a significant influence on the measurement quality. Depending on the application, different antenna designs are used, such as horn antennas, rod antennas or encapsulated antennas.
The choice of antenna depends, among other things, on the installation situation, the container geometry and the process conditions. The space available for installation also plays an important role.
When purchasing, you should therefore check which antenna design is best suited to the application in question and whether the sensor can be easily integrated into existing systems.
In many industrial applications, radar reflections can be caused by installations, agitators or container structures. Modern radar sensors have digital signal processing systems that can detect and suppress such interference.
Powerful signal processing improves measurement stability and reduces incorrect measurements. The quality of the integrated signal processing and filter technology should therefore also be taken into account when making a professional purchase.
Another important aspect is the integration of the sensor into existing control and automation systems. Modern radar sensors offer various interfaces and communication protocols to transfer measurement data to process control systems or industrial control systems.
Compatibility with existing systems makes installation easier and enables efficient integration into existing processes. The option of remote parameterization or diagnostics can also be advantageous for industrial applications.
In many industries, measuring devices must meet certain standards and safety requirements. This applies in particular to applications in potentially explosive atmospheres, in the chemical industry or in safety-critical systems.
When making a professional purchase, you should therefore check whether the sensor has the necessary certifications and approvals. These may relate to requirements for electrical safety, explosion protection or hygiene standards, for example.
Free-space radar sensors are generally considered to be low-maintenance, as they operate without contact and have no moving parts. Nevertheless, ease of maintenance, availability of spare parts and technical support play an important role.
A reliable manufacturer should be able to offer a long-term supply of spare parts, technical advice and support during installation and commissioning.
Software updates and diagnostic functions can also improve long-term operational reliability.
Professional purchasing should not only consider the purchase price. Much more important are the total costs over the entire life cycle.
High-quality radar sensors can offer higher measurement accuracy, greater reliability and lower maintenance costs. This can reduce long-term costs for maintenance, process disruptions or production downtime.
In addition to the purchase price, an economic evaluation should therefore also take into account factors such as service life, energy consumption, maintenance requirements and process reliability.

The professional purchase of free-space radar sensors requires a careful evaluation of technical, economic and application-specific factors. Particularly important are the precise analysis of the measuring task, the selection of the appropriate radar frequency, a suitable measuring range and a robust design for the respective environmental conditions. In addition, aspects such as antenna design, signal processing, system integration and conformity with standards play a central role. The reliability of the manufacturer, technical support and long-term spare parts supply should also be included in the decision. Companies that systematically take these criteria into account can ensure that free-space radar sensors work reliably, deliver precise measurements and contribute to the efficiency and stability of industrial processes in the long term.
