Below you will find an overview of the most important criteria to look out for when buying mandarins:

When buying mandarins, there are some important aspects to consider in order to choose the best fruit.

• A strong, even orange color indicates ripe fruit.
• Slight green spots often mean that the mandarin is still ripening, but this does not necessarily affect the taste.
• The skin should be smooth, plump and undamaged.
• Avoid fruit with soft or rotten spots, mold or extremely dry, wrinkly skin.
• Heavier mandarins are often juicier as they contain more flesh and juice.
• The mandarin should feel slightly firm, but not hard. Fruit that is too soft may be overripe or already starting to spoil.
• Fresh mandarins give off a pleasant, sweet citrus scent. If they have no or an unpleasant odor, they may be overripe or inferior.
• The peak season for mandarins is in the winter months (roughly from October to February).
• Varieties such as satsumas (Japan), clementines (Spain or Morocco) or tangerines (USA) have specific flavor profiles.
• Choose the variety according to your needs:
• Clementines are ideal for fresh consumption as they are often seedless.
• Satsumas are perfect for juice or jam as they are juicy and easy to peel.
• Minneolas: Slightly tart taste, good for savory dishes.
• Prefer loose fruit: This allows you to check each mandarin individually.
• Net packaging: Check all packaging for rotten or damaged fruit.
• Organic mandarins are free from chemical pesticides and may have a better taste quality. The peel of organic mandarins is also suitable for use in the kitchen (e.g. for zesting or jam).

For juicy, tasty mandarins, look for a smooth, plump skin, a good weight, a sweet aroma and seasonal origin. Organic quality and a careful check for freshness and damage will help you make the best choice.
