In response to customer requirements, Comet Yxlon has developed the FF20 CT Metrology and the FF35 CT Metrology with high-quality tubes and detectors for a wide range of inspections. While the FF20 CT Metrology focuses on smaller parts, the FF35 CT Metrology with its two X-ray sources enables the measurement of a wide range of components and different materials. For maximum accuracy and repeatability, the Comet Yxlon CT systems are equipped with granite-based manipulators, high-precision Heidenhain length and angle encoders, water-cooled X-ray tubes and quality class 3 air conditioning.
The intuitive Geminy user interface enables smooth workflows thanks to simple touchscreen operation. With just a few taps, operators can perform a reverification and automatically receive the test report for traceability and verification. In addition, the history of SD measurements can be easily retrieved for further analysis. Thanks to the innovative Dragonfly and Volume Graphics software, users have extensive tools at their disposal: for multi-dimensional display and segmentation of image data, for visualization of geometric tolerance deviations or for precise defect detection in the sub-voxel area.
To enable lower fuel consumption and higher engine efficiency, the latest aircraft engines are manufactured from INCONEL, a nickel alloy, using the investment casting process. The challenge for manufacturers is that investment casting requires complex cooling channels and internal cavities, which precludes the use of conventional ultrasonic testing methods. CT measurement technology is the only non-destructive method for measuring the inner walls that can detect possible core displacement during the casting process.
The advantages of CT metrology for metal casting.
Increasingly stringent quality requirements for castings in terms of surface quality and inclusions require special systems for quality assurance. Comet Yxlon CT metrology systems provide internal structure measurements of the highest complexity and help to optimize process chains. Foundries benefit from reliable inspection results based on industry standards, nominal/actual comparisons, shape and position tolerances (GD&T), wall thickness measurement and edge distance calculation.
